While kitchen design can be fun and exciting, it has also become an extremely customized field where mistakes can be costly.

I'm a professional kitchen designer with a website and a column called "A Reader Asks" where homeowners ask me questions about their kitchen projects. Here are twenty of the most popular, such as

-- "How can I get design help with a small project?"
-- "Kitchen design for Left-handers?"
-- "Are Distressed Cabinets Timeless?"
-- "Painted Cabinets - MDF or wood?"
-- "Which appliances should I use for small kitchen luxury?"
-- "Can I vary the size of cabinet handles on my doors and drawers?"
-- "Is a special cabinet required for a professional range top?"
-- "How high should I hang pendant lights over my island?"
-- And more.

Twenty questions with twenty answers. I hope some of them will be useful for you!

20 Kitchen Design Questions Answered eBook Kelly Morisseau

She definitely answers kitchen design questions, and because I write about hiring home improvement contractors, I was interested in what she has to say. Good stuff on handling problem corners and questions like 'should I move the wall or get a custom (skinny) cabinet instead?'
She's a woman after my own heart, because I think she hates farmer sinks as much as I do, based on the way the client asked the question about them, 'why are they so popular?' Kelly, be brave and say they're ugly, they will be horribly dated in eight years, and if you get one you'll want another remodel only ten years from now just to get rid of it. Kelly doesn't slam them, but she does make a nice list of the negatives.

I recommend this book for anyone who is contemplating a kitchen remodel. Like most contractors, she slants things financially -- a $35,000 kitchen is high end no matter where you live, and anyone paying $70,000 is being royally shafted. Which she doesn't say, she simply doesn't flinch and says a designer can do a bit better than that. The implication is that the figures don't include appliances, which they don't in the minds of most kitchen designers.

Designers like Kelly are great, they can pull it all together into something wow, and they can incorporate a dozen small things you won't think of until after it's in. But never, never tell them your budget with appliances, talk their language and only give them the cabinet-floor-backspash portion of your budget, or else you won't be getting appliances. They will always take every dime of your budget. Guaranteed. Plus $2,000 more.

And she didn't blanch at $48 each for 6" tiles, which is outrageous and the right answer is 'shop someplace else.' She says some great stuff about small kitchens.
Another thing we totally agree upon is the option of an upper-cabinet-free kitchen. I like the idea of a wall of windows where the cabinets usually are. She also suggests the solution I love for dish storage: a pantry cabinet. I'm preferential to one the same depth as the refrigerator, having a door with shelves on it, but her idea is generally the same; one floor to ceiling cabinet giving storage for seldom-used appliances and dishes high and low, and a good space for cups and plates at chest height.
